Sunny Caribbee (pronounced CARE-a-bee) is our cherished 40-plus-year-old spice company located in the heart of Road Town, on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Our world famous proprietary spice blends, sauces, condiments, teas and beverage mixes, and sweet side treats are at the heart of what we do so no matter where you are, the taste of the Caribbean will be a consistent part of your cooking. Our recipes have been the same for decades guaranteeing that you can pass your recipes down to the next generation! (For those of you who used to visit us on Main Street, times have changed so be sure to check our Location page as we have moved)
Founded in 1983, it was the Gunter family.....,
Decades slid by and their son Greg took over the business while the product line expanded and the name Sunny Caribbee became a staple in so many kitchens throughout the region. As tourism grew, so did the Sunny Caribbee customer base. More makers were brought into the fold using local and regional canners, preservers and hot sauce makers to add to the Sunny pantry. The Sunny Caribbee Herb and Spice Shop on Main Street was a Road Town icon.
In 2017 our islands were hit by the strongest recorded hurricane ever to make landfall and, as one might imagine, it took several years to get back on our feet. In 2022, Annie MacPhail joined the small team of Sunny staff to help grow the business back up. Today we are a staff of 4 including Jocelyn Gunter (Baby Spice as she is affectionately called), granddaughter of the founders. Bernadette Athanaze who mixed spices for over 25 years is also back on staff as well as Walter Hall, our office and IT whiz. We have over 60 of our products back 'online' and more coming every month.
Life in the kitchen (and the galley!) is so much easier when you have Sunny Caribbee to cook and 'condiment-alize' with. And in this heat, who doesn't love that? Our spice blends are still produced and packaged in-house in classic collectable Shaker Tins and Red Top Grinders. Rub-A-Dub, Herb Pepper Blend, Caribbee Curry, Down Island Dill, Presto Pesto are just a few of our most popular spice blends. Our regional makers produce our hot sauces and condiments such as Pirate's Gold made from carambola (starfruit), Pineapple Express combining the sweet of pineapple and the heat of hot peppers - all grown of course in the Caribbean. Fresh tropical fruit jams and chutneys and local Island Sea Salt direct from our own Salt Island are a few more of our mouth watering favorites, and all make up what we call the 'Magic of the Caribbean'!
We are now located in the historic Arosa House on Waterfront Drive on the western side of Road Town. We're a tiny house that looks just like our logo and we're set back off the road, in between Nutmeg & Co. and Richardson's Rigging across from the main ferry parking. Just look for our original sign. You can't miss it.
And it is with great pride that we can say the original recipe book was found after that storm and that book is the basis of everything we do.
